Morandi and Fontana: Invisible Infinite

Morandi and Fontana: Invisible Infinite

Curated by Maria Cristina Bandera and Sergio Risaliti, the exhibition “Morandi and Fontana: Invisible Infinite” was held from April 12 to September 14, 2025, at the CAMeC in La Spezia. The showcase brings together two figures who, at first glance, appear to share no common ground, yet stand as the two primary protagonists of 20th-century Italian art.

Parallel Lines Meeting in the Infinite

Although the two artists seem as “irreconcilable as two parallel lines,” as Risaliti noted, the exhibition reveals a profound underlying connection rooted in their search for the absolute. The decision to compare them stems from their unique artistic visions:

  • Giorgio Morandi interrogates form and time through the stillness of everyday objects.
  • Lucio Fontana breaks through the two-dimensional plane to explore space and the surface.

Matter and the Invisible

What truly unites Morandi and Fontana is their shared perception of the infinite. Despite their opposing aesthetic starting points, both revolutionized our understanding of matter: Morandi by turning the ordinary into something spiritual, and Fontana by opening physical gateways into the unknown. It is precisely this concept of the “invisible” that transforms their apparent divergence into a rigorous dialogue on the nature of existence and art.
