Umbria Bids Farewell to the Master: The Success of Mimmo Paladino’s Retrospective

Dedicated to Mimmo Paladino, the exhibition event that from November 8, 2025, to January 18, 2026, transformed Umbria into an exceptional stage for contemporary art. This widespread retrospective successfully fostered a profound dialogue between the Campanian artist’s archaic, symbolic language and the region’s historic heritage.

The initiative spanned three prestigious venues—the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia, the Rocca Albornoz in Spoleto, and the Ducal Palace in Gubbio—effectively networking the region’s cultural landmarks. Curated by Costantino D’Orazio and Aurora Roscini Vitali, the exhibition offered a comprehensive look at over fifty years of Paladino’s career: from his early photographic experiments in the 1970s to the monumental canvases that marked his return to figuration.

A tribute Between painting and urban space

The event extended far beyond museum walls; Paladino literally “invaded” the heart of Perugia. Visitors will long remember:

  • The extraordinary 600-square-meter installation on the facade of Palazzo Baldeschi.
  • The unique artist-designed Christmas lights that illuminated downtown Perugia.

A particular highlight was the presence of milestones such as Silenzioso mi ritiro a dipingere un quadro (1977), a manifesto work that invited the public to reflect on the connections between Paladino, Arte Povera, and American Pop Art.

This retrospective was more than just an exhibition; it was a successful experiment in regional promotion, confirming Umbria as a central hub for international culture. As the curtain falls on these works, what remains is the legacy of a unique encounter between historical settings and the visionary energy of one of the greatest masters of our time.
