The London art scene plays host to a fundamental tribute to one of the undisputed masters of Italian Conceptualism: Emilio Isgrò. Through the exhibition “Erasing to Create,” international audiences have the opportunity to immerse themselves in over sixty years of research dedicated to one of the most paradoxical and fertile gestures in contemporary art: erasure (la cancellatura).
Since the early 1960s, Isgrò has transformed the act of crossing out into a sophisticated creative tool. This is not a nihilistic negation, but rather a re-semanticization of the text: by covering words and images, the artist does not destroy meaning; instead, he releases new layers of significance, inviting the viewer to read between the lines of the visible.
The exhibition retraces the key milestones of his career, highlighting how Isgrò’s signature black mark has impacted encyclopedias, geographic maps, and great literary classics. In this process, the word is rescued from the rapid consumption of everyday communication and restored to a dimension of profound reflection.
