  • Mario Merz was born in Milan in 1925. In 1954, he held his first solo exhibition at Galleria La Bussola in Turin, showcasing paintings that evoke organic forms. From 1966, he began incorporating the innovative use of neon tubes into his work, inserting them into canvases and objects. In 1967, he joined a group of artists including Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Giulio Paolini, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Gilberto Zorio. This circle became the fulcrum of the Arte Povera movement. A distinctive element of Merz’s artistic production emerged in 1968: the igloo.
