- Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona in 1923 and was among the most important international informal artists. He enrolled in law school at the University of Barcelona and then abandoned his studies and dedicated himself to painting. In 1948 he exhibited his works for the first time at the Salone I October in Barcelona while in 1950 he represented Spain at the Venice Biennale, in which he would then participate several times over the years. In 1960 he participated in the New Spanish Painting and Sculpture exhibition at the MOMA in NY. In the 1970s his work took a political turn in support of the Catalan cause and in strong opposition to the Franco regime.
