Walter Robinson (born 1950 in Wilmington, Delaware) is an American painter, art critic, and curator. He is a prominent figure in the New York art scene and was among the most influential protagonists of the East Village movement in the 1980s. After moving to Manhattan to study at Columbia University, he quickly integrated into the city's avant-garde circuit, co-founding the famous independent magazine Art-Rite in 1973, which became an essential touchstone for conceptual and alternative art criticism of the era.
Robinson's pictorial research developed in alignment with the Pictures Generation, exploring the language of mass media, consumer culture, and the mechanics of visual desire with sharp irony. His style is characterized by an immediate, fluid, and intentionally accessible figurative painting that draws heavily from the imagery of pulp fiction, romance novel illustrations, and mid-20th-century American advertising graphics. In his compositions, passionate embraces and melancholic figures coexist with contemporary still lifes depicting ordinary consumer goods: over-the-counter medicine packages, cheeseburgers, liquor bottles, and items of clothing.
Marked by expressive brushwork and a vibrant, direct color palette, Robinson's work transforms mass-culture clichés into a reflection on commercial fetishism and human vulnerability. His aesthetic, often cited as a precursor to trends tied to modern visual simplicity, celebrates the act of painting as an intimate form of appropriating the daily flow of images.
Alongside his studio practice, Robinson made significant contributions to American critical debate as an editor for Art in America and as the founding editor-in-chief of Artnet Magazine from 1996 to 2012. His works are held in prestigious public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
