Mimmo Paladino was born in 1948 in Paduli, in the province of Benevento. An undisputed protagonist of the international art scene, he is one of the key figures of the Transavanguardia movement, a term coined by the critic Achille Bonito Oliva in 1980 to define the return to painting and figuration following years of conceptual dominance. Paladino's artistic formation is rooted in the cultural climate of the 1960s, but it was in the early 1970s that his research underwent a decisive turning point. During this period, the artist began to focus on drawing, introducing those mythological subjects that would later acquire a role of fundamental importance in his mature production. His works are not mere representations but true visual palimpsests that draw from archaeological and mythological sources, encompassing Egyptian, Etruscan, Greco-Roman, Early Christian, and Romanesque art.
Stylistic evolution and multimedia language
Paladino works with a vast range of expressive mediums, including—in addition to drawing and painting—sculpture and various printmaking techniques. This versatility leads him to explore the boundary between flat surfaces and three-dimensional volume. Between 1978 and 1980, the artist created monochrome paintings in primary colors, to which he added geometric elements and found objects, such as wigs and masks. This preparatory phase culminated around 1983 in a powerful synthesis, where he began applying sculptural forms directly onto the canvas, blurring the boundaries between disciplines. The importance the artist assigns to his graphic production is evidenced by the collection of all his graphic and multiple works in two volumes edited by Enzo Di Martino. For Paladino, engraving and printmaking are not secondary activities but a laboratory for experimentation with signs, symbols, and memory.
International success: Venice Biennale and Documenta
The year 1980 marked the date of his definitive consecration. On the occasion of the Venice Biennale, Achille Bonito Oliva included Paladino in the landmark exhibition "Aperto 80", alongside Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, and Nicola De Maria. This was the official birth of Transavanguardia, a movement that returned Italian art to the center of global attention. From that moment on, Paladino’s presence in major international exhibitions became constant: he participated in Documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982, solidifying his reputation as an innovator capable of dialoguing with tradition. His monumental installations have become icons of the contemporary urban landscape. One need only think of the famous "Salt Mountain" (Montagna del Sale), first created in Gibellina in 1990 and subsequently re-installed in Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples in 1995. This work perfectly embodies his poetics: a mound of salt from which wooden horses emerge—symbols of a lost and rediscovered classicism, of a rite renewed through art.
Museums and global recognition
Paladino has held numerous exhibitions in the world's leading galleries and museums. His works are held in prestigious public institutions, including the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His ability to span painting, sculpture, architecture, and set design (including works for theater and cinema, such as the film "Quijote" presented at Venice in 2006) makes him a total artist—a 21st-century humanist. Today, Mimmo Paladino lives and works between Paduli and Milan, continuing to investigate the mystery of existence through a language made of archaic symbols, hieratic faces, and totemic figures that seem to emerge from a suspended time. His art is a bridge stretched between the remote past of our civilization and the restlessness of the present.
