Michelangelo Pistoletto (Biella, 1933) is one of the most influential and multifaceted figures on the international contemporary art scene. His research, which began in the 1950s, has dismantled the traditional boundaries of the canvas, transforming the artwork into a dynamic space of interaction between the viewer, the environment, and the temporal dimension. An undisputed protagonist of Arte Povera, Pistoletto has constantly evolved his language, moving from an investigation of individual identity to collective and social responsibility.

The early years and the revolution of the Mirror Paintings

After taking his first steps in his father’s restoration workshop and attending Armando Testa’s advertising school, Pistoletto’s career began with a focus on self-portraiture. Between 1961 and 1962, a fundamental breakthrough occurred: the creation of the Mirror Paintings (Quadri Specchianti). By using polished stainless steel plates onto which tissue-paper images were applied, the artist broke down the barrier between artistic fiction and reality. The viewer physically enters the work, becoming the protagonist of an image that changes instantaneously with the passage of time. This innovation immediately propelled him onto the international stage, leading to exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (1966) and establishing a dialogue with American Pop Art, while maintaining a critical distance based on the phenomenology of existence.

Arte Povera and the "Minus Objects"

In 1966, Pistoletto created the Minus Objects (Oggetti in meno), a series of works that rejected stylistic homogeneity in favor of absolute creative freedom. These works are considered foundational for the birth of Arte Povera, a movement theorized by Germano Celant, in which Pistoletto played a leading role. During this period, the artist began exploring the performative dimension with the group "Lo Zoo," organizing collective actions that anticipated his vision of art as a tool for social transformation.

Museum presence and global recognition

Pistoletto’s career is marked by participation in the world's most prestigious exhibitions. He has taken part in nine editions of the Venice Biennale (receiving the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2003) and four editions of Documenta in Kassel. His solo exhibitions have inhabited the temples of world art: from MoMA in New York (1988) to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome (1991), and the monumental retrospective at the Musée du Louvre in Paris in 2013. His works are now held in the permanent collections of major museums, including the Tate Modern in London, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Cittadellarte and the Third Paradise

In 1998, Pistoletto founded Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, a laboratory for creativity and social responsibility. Here, art intertwines with economy, politics, and ecology. From this commitment, the sign-symbol of the Third Paradise (Terzo Paradiso) was born: a reconfiguration of the mathematical infinity sign symbolizing the synthesis between the natural paradise and the artificial paradise created by technology. This symbol has become a global icon, installed in institutional settings such as the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva.
