Emilio Vedova (Venice, 1919 – 2006) stands as one of the most explosive and charismatic figures of 20th-century art. A leading protagonist of international Art Informel, his body of work is a concentrate of pure energy, where the pictorial gesture transforms into an ethical and political testimony. Born into a family of artisans and laborers, Vedova was largely self-taught, fueling his artistic vision through a feverish study of the Venetian tradition (from Tintoretto to Piranesi) and an innate drive toward rebellion against established canons.

The early years and Resistance

Emilio Vedova’s career officially began in the 1930s, with drawings and paintings that already revealed a nervous and dramatic stroke. In 1942, he joined the Corrente group, an artistic and political opposition movement against the Fascist regime. His art was never detached from life: between 1944 and 1945, he actively participated in the Italian Resistance in the Piedmontese hills, an experience that profoundly shaped his poetics of "struggle" and "protest." In the post-war period, Vedova was among the signatories of the "Oltre Guernica" manifesto (1946) in Milan and a co-founder of the Nuova Secessione Italiana, which later became the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti. During these years, his research fluctuated between Cubist-inspired decomposition and Expressionist tension, as demonstrated by his first participation in the Venice Biennale in 1948.

International success and Art Informel

The 1950s marked the consecration of his unique style. In 1952, along with artists such as Afro and Birolli, he became part of the Gruppo degli Otto (Group of Eight), supported by Lionello Venturi. This period signaled his definitive transition toward gestural abstraction. Works such as the Ciclo della Protesta (Protest Cycle) and the Ciclo della Natura (Nature Cycle, 1953) established him as the "Italian brother" to Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline, though Vedova maintained a uniquely European sensibility tied to historical and material stratification. His presence in major institutions became constant: he participated in Documenta in Kassel (1955, 1959, 1964) and received the prestigious Guggenheim International Award in 1956. In 1960, he reached the pinnacle of national recognition by winning the Grand Prize for Painting at the XXX Venice Biennale.

Revolutionizing space: the Plurimi

In the 1960s, Vedova shattered the boundaries of two-dimensionality. During his residency in Berlin (1963–1965), he created his famous Plurimi: multi-material, double-sided structures that invaded the exhibition space, allowing the viewer to interact physically with the work. These installations anticipated much of contemporary environmental art research and were presented with great success at museums such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.

Late works: Teleri, Dischi and the Golden Lion

After a phase of intense graphic activity and teaching (he taught for years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and in Salzburg), Vedova returned to large-scale painting in the 1980s with his majestic Teleri (Canvases) and, subsequently, the Dischi (Disks) and Tondi (Rounds). These circular works represent a final synthesis of his research on movement and time. In 1997, the Venice Biennale awarded him the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, sealing an unbreakable bond with his hometown. Today, his works are held in the world's most important museums, from MoMA in New York to Tate Modern in London. His legacy is preserved by the Fondazione Emilio e Annabianca Vedova in Venice, located in the historic Magazzini del Sale.
